Nail Art: Blackfish

Nail Art: Blackfish

Blackfish - Main CollageThere have been two documentaries in recent years that have grabbed a hold of my heart and just won’t let go. The first: The Cove, inspired me to create Atlantic with Lex Cosmetics with 10% of sales going to Oceanic Preservation Society.

The second? Blackfish. I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters, but I watched it on CNN and again when it made it’s debut on Netflix. The other night Alli asked if she should watch it? I said ABSOLUTELY! So….that got me thinking. I want more people to be aware of how these animals live on a day to day basis. How better to do that than nail art? Blackfish is heartbreaking, but I think it’s really important for people to be informed. I hope that maybe this will inspire you to  watch it too, or at least learn a bit about the issue.

Blackfish chronicles the life of a male orca, Tilikum, who has been in captivity since 1983. He currently resides at Sea World Orlando. While Blackfish focuses on Tilikum,  there are so many captive whales and dolphins world wide. There is a list on Wikipedia of killer whales that have been kept in captivity.

I decided to recreate the original movie poster on my thumb. The black is Essie’s Licorice. For the white I used Bunny by Julep. The “ocean” on the rest of my nails is OPI‘s Suzi Says Feng Shui.

If you’re on the fence, you can see the trailer for Blackfish here. Its currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray. You can also rent it on Amazon or iTunes for $3.99.
